Massachusetts Mental Health Center (MMHC), formerly the Boston Psychopathic
Hospital, opened its doors on June 24, 1912. From its inception, the institution
was a hybrid of the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH) and
Harvard Medical School (HMS). Located three blocks from HMS, it is both
a state mental health facility and a center of excellence in academic
psychiatry, combining public service with outstanding clinical and research
programs. As one of the oldest public teaching hospitals in the United
States, MMHC has had a world-renowned reputation for leadership and clinical
care of patients; training of psychiatrists, psychologists, and mental
health clinicians of all disciplines; and, ground-breaking research in
mental health disciplines and neuroscience.
