Murphy Fund

Murphy Fund

The Massachusetts Mental Health Center, a Massachusetts Department
of Mental Health-funded community mental health center affiliated with
Harvard Medical School in Boston, has become a beneficiary of the Francis
P. Murphy, Jr. Trust, through which we have been able to establish the
Governor Francis P. Murphy Fund. The purpose of this fund is to “aid
worthy and deserving students [in the mental health fields] in acquiring
and completing their education or post graduate education.”

Applications will be judged by the following criteria:

  1. The mission of Massachusetts Mental Health Center is to provide
a comprehensive continuum of clinical treatment, case management,
residential and rehabilitation services for clients with serious and
persistent mental illness to enhance their opportunity to lead satisfying
and productive lives in the community. We are committed to the continued
development of innovative treatment, to excellence in training and
to research, which will provide current and future benefits to clients
with mental illness. The course of study proposed by a Murphy Fund
recipient must be relevant to this mission. All proposals to be funded
must be directly linked to improving service, access and availability
to individuals served at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center.
  2. The proposed course of study will be relevant to the specific concerns
of the professional discipline of the trainee.
  3. The funds will be available to trainees in every discipline represented
at Mass. Mental Health Center. At present this includes psychiatry,
psychology, medicine, nursing, social work, counseling, and occupational
    therapy.
  4. The goals of the proposal will be able to be accomplished within
12 months from the beginning of the academic year.
  5. A mid-year progress report and year-end final report will be required
from each funded trainee. Additional reports may be required at the
discretion of the Murphy Fund Committee.
  6. The proposal needs to identify the type of work product the applicant
proposes to create, e.g. a submittable paper or poster, pilot data
capable of being used to seek additional funding, a rehabilitation
tool or instructional handbook for clients, a new group therapy protocol,
a new didactic curriculum, a course of specialized clinical training
which can be identified as a tangible work product such as dialectical
behavior therapy, etc., which will be usable by the institution or
by professionals in general after the completion of the fellowship.
  7. Consistent with the mission of Mass. Mental Health Center, diversity
criteria will be strongly taken into account, i.e. proposals which
will increase the socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, or other types of
diversity of trainees at Mass. Mental Health Center.

Candidates should submit a detailed proposal of their course of study
and anticipated work project, including a budget which notes expected
salary, cost of any outside supervision, travel expenses, material expenses,
and so on. The number of trainees funded in any year and the size of
each award will be determined according to the annual limitations on
the use of the funds as dictated by the Murphy Trust.
